about the work
A monumental portrait of Lyskamm, which stands in the Zermatt valley on the Swiss-Italian border. The two summits of this Valais colossus rise to altitudes of 4527 and 4479 meters. I took this vertical black and white photograph in honor of one of the most beautiful mountains in the Alps. To highlight its magnificence and gigantic scale. 1300 metres separate the crests of Lyskamm from the glacier at its foot. In the background, the Ludwisghöhe can watch the breathtaking spectacle from the heights of Monte Rosa.Steep-slope skiers make no mistake. They love the sensations of the Lyskamm slopes. But you have to be born with skis on your feet to venture down such slopes. My dream lies elsewhere. To one day climb summit and immortalize it through my art. The mountains offer each of us the opportunity to fulfill our destiny and blossom. It's up to us to find our own path to happiness.
I love the north face of this mountain which, from the Mont-Rose hut, appears inaccessible and lined with hanging glaciers. This photograph from Lyskamm is a hymn to their eternal grandeur. A fragile witness to a world that is gradually disappearing, the Grenzgletscher is, for me, one of the most beautiful glaciers in the Alps.
I made this work at daybreak, when a summer storm had just covered the mountain in a magnificent blanket of snow. The first rays of sunlight illuminate summit, stunning in its beauty. The shadow of Mount Rose casts itself across its face, feeding the picture with a fascinating play of light. The immaculate snow sublimates the features of Lyskamm. Enriching the portrait with new textures, new contrasts. Giving birth to invisible details. Like a rough diamond that reveals its beauty to those who know how to look at it.
