Aiguille du Chardonnet
Lord of the clouds
About the work
That day, the clouds were playing with the light, wrapping the mountain in their whimsical curls. Between two gusts of wind, the Aiguille du Chardonnet appeared to me in all its aristocratic splendor. Its sharp silhouette pierces the mists like a ship splitting the waves of a celestial sea. I think of those daring men - Michel Balmat, Michel Ambroise Ducroz, Robert Fowler - who, on September 20 1865, were the first to set foot on its summit via the north face of the west ridge. What temerity, what passion animated them to venture onto these inhospitable slopes!
The power of Le Chardonnet is expressed in every asperity of its rock, in every line of its jagged ridges. In this photograph, I wanted to capture the dialogue between strength and beauty, between light and shadow, between the perennial and the ephemeral. The mountains sometimes offer us these moments of grace when time seems suspended. The Aiguille du Chardonnet, bathed in clouds that dance around it, reminds us of our insignificance in the face of these monuments of nature. And yet, what pride and emotion to be able to contemplate and share this fleeting vision of a summit that has defied gravity and human imagination for millennia.
