about the work
The Matterhorn, an immaculate and smoking pyramid, is dressed in its most beautiful white dress and reveals its subtle nature to us while its majestic eastern face is bathed in the mid-winter sun, while the northern face, as if more reserved, prefers to remain in the shade. Fragment of a living world out of time, this iconic summit permanently invites us to the elevation to whom knows how to contemplate it.I still remember that blessed morning that I will never forget when I found myself facing the famous and legendary Matterhorn. Culminating at 4478 meters above Zermatt, in the Valais Alps in Switzerland, I was facing the Hörnli ridge with its mythical hut at its feet. This is where the first mountaineer to have risked his life summit, Edward Whymper, succeeded in his exploit.
This picture was taken after a snow storm and I prepared for a long time to take it, hoping to get the Matterhorn all white and plastered with snow. It took me many years and every time the snow fell, I went back to Zermatt, without ever succeeding in getting that moment of truth. I even came to doubt that one day I would be able to get the quality of snow needed on the Matterhorn, because there was always either too much wind, too much cold or it was snowing too low...
And yet, one morning, while I was on the heights of Zermatt, the clouds tore at sunrise and offered me a perfect vision: the Matterhorn completely immaculate of white accompanied by winds and clouds which came to bring a subtle supplement of soul between two worlds.
I like to think that these clouds are a sign that the mountain is not frozen, that it is alive and that something powerfully elusive is happening in its heart. This is what I wanted to reveal to you and I hope will bring you as much pleasure to contemplate.
