Dent Blanche
Queen of the Alps
About the work
I've been waiting for this fleeting moment for years. I've waited for that moment when the clouds suddenly part to reveal the mountain in all its fullness. And it was in 2018 that the Dent Blanche finally offered itself to me. The low-angled light sculpted its edges with the precision of a goldsmith, revealing every detail of its complex architecture.
I love the duality that emanates from this black-and-white work. The graphic rigor of the lines contrasts with the softness of the eternal snows. I love the delicate texture of the slopes, the deep shadows of the vertical faces, the silvery reflections on the surrounding snow. The Ferpècle glacier lies at the foot of the Dent Blanche like a royal carpet.
In this portrait of the Dent Blanche Blanche, I wanted to capture the mystical aura that surrounds it. Its perfect balance, timeless beauty and solitary presence make it an Alpine icon that transcends mere geography to reach the realm of the sublime, where nature becomes a work of art and our contemplation becomes reverence.
Climbing the Dent Blanche Blanche to its summit was an extraordinary experience for me. That day, my guide and I braved a high-mountain thunderstorm for almost an hour. The violent wind had covered the summit with fresh snow, making it almost inaccessible. It was a terrifying yet exhilarating moment that I experienced in a very special way. Up there, immersed in the storm, my thoughts kept returning to my own portraits of the Dent Blanche. There was an intense, almost unreal joy in living at the very heart of the work I had created. In those precious minutes, I became the hero of a scene immortalized by my own gaze.
