Grand Combin
summit in the storm
About the work
Situated between the Val de Bagnes and the Val d'Entremont, the Grand Combin rises to 4,314 meters. It is the highest summit between Mont Blanc and the Dent Blanche, and dominates an imposing, austere massif known as the Combin. It's a mountain that's neither easy to approach, nor easy to photograph.
That day, I didn't try to capture the calm. I wanted to show its character. The Grand Combin in all its truth. The storm. The wind sweeping across the ridges, the snow billowing in clouds, the low-angled light cutting into the shapes. Through this photograph of the Grand Combin, I wanted to pay homage to the ruggedness of the high mountains. Up there, there's no comfort, no indulgence. Just the essentials. The cold, the wind, the rock. And yet, in this tumult, there's a kind of grace. A naked beauty. A force that transcends us and draws us in.
The Grand Combin appears to me here not as a monument, but as a being. Proud, beaten, but still standing. In its turmoil, it reveals itself. And we, below, can only listen.
