Grand Cornier
verticality
About the work
The face rises with an audacity that defies the laws of balance. The absolute verticality of this face fascinates with its perfect geometry, accentuated by the format of this photograph, which reveals all the drama of this Valais giant.
The storm has just passed, leaving behind a spectacle of rare purity. The fresh snow reveals every detail of this rocky wall, creating a striking contrast between the immaculate whiteness and the dark rock peeking through here and there.
I waited years to be able to photograph the Grand Cornier. To discover this mountain under such a blanket of snow only happens once or twice a year. And this Himalayan vision vanishes a few minutes after it appears. I have to be there, in front of this giant, when this rare moment occurs. Every minute counts before this spectacle disappears. Nature is amazing: it creates wonders that are as imposing as they are ephemeral.
I chose this angle of view because it allows the relief to show all its harmony. The verticality of the mountain is perfect. I love the relief that emerges from the snow, the seracs that give life to the face. I love the silvery nuances of this photograph. Even in the darker areas, the mountain reveals itself, revealing its dazzling beauty and its innermost secrets.
