Vertiginous and towering, the Dents du Midi reveal their titanic architecture in this bird's-eye view of La Forteresse and La Cathédrale. Rising to 3164 and 3160 metres respectively, these two major summits the massif impose their presence over the Val d'Illiez in the Valais.

I took this photograph in 2020. The light cuts into every vein of the rock. It reveals a mineral landscape of infinite textures. The geological strata tell the story of a thousand years of mountain history. In the background, like a ghost emerging from the mist, Mont Blanc appears majestically.

I particularly like the contrasts that animate this work - the ruggedness of the Dents du Midi in the foreground dialogues with the vaporous softness of the distant mists. The depth of the blacks, the richness of the grays and the subtle luminosity of the whites create a monochrome symphony in which each nuance reveals a different aspect of the mountain.

In this intimate portrait of the Dents du Midi, I wanted to capture the very essence of the high mountains - the wild, untamed beauty that both fascinates and frightens us. La Forteresse and La Cathédrale are aptly named: one an impregnable rock bastion, the other a soaring spire. Together, they invite us to raise our gaze and our soul to the most sublime and intimidating of nature's creations.
