Lyskamm
Hymn to Verticality
About the work
Steep-slope skiers make no mistake. They love the thrill of the Lyskamm slopes. But you have to have been born with skis on your feet to venture down these slopes. My dream lies elsewhere. To one day climb summit and immortalize it through my art. The mountains offer each of us the opportunity to fulfill our destiny and blossom. It's up to us to find our own path to happiness.
I love the north face of this mountain which, from the Mont-Rose hut, appears inaccessible and lined with hanging glaciers. This photograph from Lyskamm is a hymn to their eternal grandeur. A fragile witness to a world that is gradually disappearing, the Grenzgletscher is, for me, one of the most beautiful glaciers in the Alps.
I created this work at dawn, when a summer storm had just covered the mountain in a magnificent blanket of snow. The first rays of sunlight illuminate the stunningly beautiful summit. The shadow of Mount Rose casts itself across its face, feeding the picture with a fascinating play of light. The immaculate snow sublimates the features of Lyskamm. Enriching the portrait with new textures, new contrasts. Giving birth to invisible details. Like a rough diamond that reveals its beauty to those who know how to look at it.
