about the work
The winds are raging at summit of Mont Blanc, king of the French Alps. I took this stunning photograph from Italy. It is from there that the mountain reveals its most spectacular silhouette and its wildest personality. In front of us, between black and white, the most difficult routes to climb to reach the top of the Mont Blanc of Courmayeur are outlined. On the left, the integral of the Brouillard, crossing several summits of more than 4000 meters of altitude: the point Baretti, the mount Brouillard and the point Louis Amédée. On the right, the integral traverse of Peuterey links the Aiguille Noire de Peuterey, the Dames Anglaises and the Aiguille Blanche de Peuterey. In the mist, the central pillar of the Frêney, under the crest of the Mont Blanc of Courmayeur. It is a dark witness to the drama that took place on its slopes in the summer of 1961. Four experienced mountaineers succumbed to the assaults of a terrifying storm. A tragic destiny of man who, despite all his efforts, remains subject to the ultimate will of nature. Walter Bonatti survived this tragedy, beautifully recounted by Virginie Troussier in her book Au milieu de l'été, un invincible hiver.
I took this portrait of Mont Blanc in the spring, when a storm from Italy was pouring down on the northern Alps. In the photograph, the high mountain is still fighting against the raging winds that are blowing summits. But it will not yield to the fury of the elements, sovereign and unchanging. It took me several years before I was able to immortalize the Mont Blanc massif. That day, nature offered me to see its absolute beauty. What an incredible opportunity I had! All the conditions that make my art an ode to the mountains were present. The snow clung to the rock faces, the clouds roamed the valley and the mist covered the summits. In creating this impressive panorama of the most famous massif of the Alps, I wanted to convey the infinite power of the mountain. Many emotions emerge from the painting. When I look at it, I am transported into another world, sublime and authentic. Its reliefs amaze me and its ridges, accessible only to the most experienced mountaineers, make me dream.
