Celestial Balance
Mystic Biancograt
About the work
After a long, meditative approach walk, climbers take it like tightrope walkers to reach, first of all, summit on the Pizzo Bianco (3993m), whose immaculate white blends here with impetuous clouds, giving the impression of treading a universe on the border between earth and sky. Then it's the final march to Piz Bernina (4048m), the only 4000m in the chain of the same name. Here, it appears discreetly, piercing the clouds.
This photo touches me for several reasons.
It's one of those bewitching, mystical shots that invite us to dream. It took me some time to capture this moment. It's all there: the smoking ridge, just emerging from a spring storm; the contrast between the glistening ice and the black rocks; the epiphany of Piz Bernina; the ternary rhythm between Biancograt, Pizzo Bianco and Piz Bernina.
For me, this ridge is like a celestial or sacred path; a path whose existence, however, is not eternal, as global warming continues its inescapable work. In several decades' time, I fear that this photograph will become one of the last testimonies to a ridge that was once still encased in ice. The mountain changes, the summits are transformed, the pure lines are altered... and me up there, who am I? a photographer of chaos, a hunter of truth.
