Castle Rock
Brenva ridge
About the work
On this particular day, the conditions were exceptional. I watched in awe as these stone lacework towers gradually emerged from a sea of stubborn clouds. The light played hide-and-seek, intermittently revealing the architectural complexity of this legendary ridge. My heart beat faster with each breakthrough of the sun, each new silhouette unveiled in this high-altitude theater. Observe the contrasts. The sharp shapes of the towers cut sharply against the shifting canvas of clouds. The dark rock, almost black in places, contrasts with the vaporous whiteness that envelops it. In this opposition lies all the drama of the high mountains - hardness and softness, permanence and ephemerality, silence and tumult.
I chose black and white for this work to amplify this fundamental duality. This technique allows the eye to focus on the essential: the radical geometry of the sharp edges, the rough texture of the rock worn by the elements, the almost ghostly presence of the clouds that seem to caress the flanks. The characteristic towers of the Brenva tell a fascinating geological story that I wanted to capture. These singular formations bear witness to the titanic forces that have shaped our Alps. The composition I chose here accentuates the impression of gushing, as if these towers were perpetually seeking to rise higher.
In this work, I wanted to capture the wild soul of the Brenva ridge. Over and above a simple topographical representation, I sought to convey the emotion felt when faced with this natural architecture, where stone seems to defy the laws of gravity. Every time I contemplate this painting, I feel once again the thrill I felt when I created it. For me, the Brenva ridge remains the perfect embodiment of the finest the Alps have to offer: a sublime harmony between power and fragility.
