Dent Blanche
Queen of the Alps
About the work
The Dent Blanche rises to an altitude of 4,358 metres. It stands at the crossroads of three valleys: the val d’Anniviers, the Val d'Hérens and the Zermatt Valley. It's known as the queen of the Valais Alps - and rightly so. Its massive silhouette, verticality and presence impress at first glance.
I was lucky enough to climb the Dent Blanche. It was an unforgettable climb. My guide and I were caught in a sudden, violent, almost unreal thunderstorm. Lightning struck all around us, the winds howled, and snow covered everything. The summit seemed to become inaccessible. This moment, as intense as it was terrifying, left a deep impression on me. But it's not the fear I remember today. It's the emotion. The power of the mountain. Its truth. And perhaps also the pride of having been able to pay tribute to it through this photograph.
In this black-and-white picture, the Dent Blanche emerges in all its splendor. The light, the snow, the movement of the wind... Everything seems to come together to reveal its grandeur. I'm proud of it, because it carries with it all the admiration I have for the giants of the Alps. And this one, more than any other, has the beauty of a queen.
