Dent Blanche and Obergabelhorn
Diamonds from Zermatt
About the work
The Dent Blanche is considered one of the most technical 4000-meter peaks in the Alps. Its conquest demands absolute mastery and unfailing determination on the part of climbers. More recently, it has become a territory of expression for steep skiers. Exceptional climbers such as Gilles Sierro and Vivian Bruchez on the south-west face, or Paul Bonhomme on the south-east face, have drawn lines on its faces.
I took this panoramic photograph just as the clouds were beginning to gather around the summits. This particular, almost dramatic light sculpts the relief. Each crevasse is revealed in an infinite palette of whites and greys, creating the rich texture that is the signature of high mountains.
The Dent Blanche inspires me deeply. This "monstrous coquette", as it was nicknamed by Guy de Maupassant, constantly drives me to pursue my photographic quest: to capture the absolute purity of the summits in order to pass on and preserve this precious natural heritage. With this work, I invite you to lose yourself in the contemplation of these giants of rock and ice. Every detail of their snow-covered flanks reveals a parallel, splendid and rich world.
