Dufourspitze
ice queen of Mont-Rose
About the work
The mountain owes its name to general and cartographer Guillaume Henri Dufour, author of the first topographical map of Switzerland. The ridge that leads to its summit is revealed here in all its verticality, a vertiginous line where balance is gained step by step. The climb, reserved for the most seasoned mountaineers, demands total commitment and absolute humility in the face of the forces of nature.
Light sculpts the relief. Shadows stretch across the face and the glacier. This subtle interplay of light and darkness gives the work its structure and intensity.
I wanted to capture the Dufourspitze in its sovereign posture, a witness to untouched nature. Every detail tells of the demands of the high mountains, the harshness of the climate and the indomitable beauty of the peaks. Here, time seems suspended, as if the mountain had decided to freeze itself to reveal all its majesty.
