Matterhorn
the Giant
About the work
It's autumn 2017. Before us, the Hörnli Ridge. It was here that, on July 14, 1865, Edward Whymper made history by making the first ascent of the Matterhorn. A victory, certainly, but also a tragedy: four men lost their lives during the descent. Since then, this ridge has become legendary. To the right, the Zmutt Ridge stretches out, even more austere.
That day, all the elements aligned. The sea of clouds formed a jewel case, the light slid down the mountainside, and the wind seemed to hold its course. But beyond luck, there was anticipation. Obsession. The deep desire to capture the very essence of this summit . Not its form, but its presence. Its soul. That silent force that flows through you when you contemplate it—or climb it.
Because I knew this mountain. I touched it with the tips of my crampons, I placed my emotions, my breath, my respect there. And each time I photograph it, it is to this memory that I pay homage. To the suspended moment, to the communion between the sky, the rock, and man.
