about the work
This photograph of the Moléson (2002m) and the Dent de Broc (1829m), taken in winter, is one of the rare shots in my work representing summits that do not belong to the world of high mountains. However, is it less mystical, less powerful than what my representations of the Alpine 4000s evoke? I don't think so.The two summits pierce a thick sea of clouds covering the Fribourg Pre-Alps, the small town of Bulle, as well as the castle of Gruyère... civilization, which is not far away, is absent here: all the attention of the spectator is turned towards these mountains that the clouds make massive, impressive. The strength of this shot lies in the balance between whites, grays and blacks. In the foreground, the Dent de Broc rises towards the sky. The subdued light that it gives off offers a perfect contrast with the Moléson; this is due to the grey tones marked by the fir trees that cover its faces. In the background, the Moléson, less sharp, wider and stretched out, balances the space by its disposition: its face plastered with snow brings a powerful luminosity.
With this shot, I wanted to capture the contrasts, to crystallize the nuances. From one mountain to another the aesthetics vary, the rhythm changes. There is something ternary here: to the slender and dark forms of the Dent de Broc, the Moléson imposes itself, calmly, in the distance in all its whiteness, the two mountains being linked by an infinite sea of clouds...
This photograph invites, in its own way, to an authentic journey and to the discovery of these low altitude mountains which fully participate in the spirit of the Alps. The small summits have something sublime. We do not get tired of them, and we should not get tired of them. We must know how to rediscover and appreciate them in their simplicity, in their familiarity... they are the summits of our childhood, those that remind us of the escapades with family and friends. These small mountains welcome us: green in summer, they are dressed in their beautiful white coat in winter. Accessible and familiar mountains, they continue to amaze those who take the time to look at them with a fresh eye.
