Finsteraarhorn
Serenity of the ridge, mystery of the shadow
About the work
I took this black and white photograph of the Finsterhaarhorn at sunrise. The mountain has just weathered the fury of a winter storm. Completely snow-covered, its east face sparkles in the sunlight, while its west face, still in shadow, reflects the light. Soft, silvery tones endow the portrait with extraordinary depth and power.
Each of the storms that hit the high mountains has a different effect on the landscape. In this work, the Schreckhorn and Lauteraarhorn are not covered in snow, even though they are only 5 km from the Finsterhaarhorn. That's why I try to understand the movements of the weather so that I'm in the right place when the magic happens. When the mountain reveals itself at its most beautiful. Pure and majestic, a white sovereign towering above the mist. On the day I painted this portrait, things happened by chance. But can we really speak of chance when photography is the fruit of years of work? Isn't the most important thing to try and never get discouraged, to believe in your lucky star and keep climbing summits as soon as a storm is forecast? Because if you keep trying, you'll eventually succeed. And when the mountain finally opens up to you, you'll understand why you've come all this way. Witnessing these unique moments becomes your reason for living, and being able to share them through photography makes you deeply happy.
