Matterhorn
Guardian of the Memory of the Alps
About the work
The Matterhorn is the hero of the picture, occupying a central position in the same way as it does at the heart of the Alps. A key protagonist in the history of mountaineering, it displays its charisma and magnificence for all to see. Contemplate the purity of its lines, sublimated by the snow freshly deposited on its rocks. In the background, one summits follows another in honour of the Queen Mountain. The Dent d'Hérens, the Grand Combin and theAiguille Verte. Under the benevolent eye of Mont Blanc on the horizon, the Matterhorn dominates the scene.
This photograph bears witness to another time. A time when glaciers reigned supreme over the mountains. When their snows thought they were still eternal. I immortalized this landscape in 2020, after the passage of a summer storm. A landmark for years to come, the work will attest to the inevitable retreat of the glaciers adorning the Matterhorn's walls.
The painting is also notable for the way it highlights the ridges running along the mountain's south face. Usually discreet, they catch our eye here, sculpted by the snow and the shadows cast by sunrise. Thus revealed, their lines are fascinating. Through a play of perspective and light, I have created a profound and powerful work in honor of the most beautiful summit in the Valais.
