Biancograt
Divine Ridge
About the work
The Biancograt appears between light and shadow. In this portrait, I wanted to highlight the aesthetics of its shape and curves. Its sinuous path outlines the mountain, the better to reach the sky. This work also bears my signature: the play of clouds escaping from a summit still smoking after a storm. In the background, emerging from the mist, the crest of Piz Bernina reveals itself in a ghostly fashion.
It took me years to get this shot. It's a long way from the ridge to where I live. So, more than ever, I had to study the weather conditions before making the trip. I tried and tried. Go, fail, come back and maybe one day succeed. It's also this game of chance that gives me the energy to return again and again to try and capture that rare moment. The magic moment when the high mountains reveal themselves as I had imagined them. Pure and majestic.
I took this exceptional photograph at the end of winter, when Biancograt was still frozen. As spring arrives, it will become increasingly snowy. It's more pleasant to climb it when it's covered in snow, as ice can be deceptive and more dangerous to walk on. Unfortunately, in 30 or 40 years' time, it will no longer be covered in snow or ice. Climate change will have had an irreversible impact on its appearance. Biancograt is one of the most precious jewels in the Alps, but it's on borrowed time. And I know how lucky I was to be able to immortalize it in this way.
