Majesty of the Glarner Alps

The hero of this panoramic photograph, Mount Tödi stands at 3613 meters above sea level on the border between the Swiss cantons of Glarus and Graubünden. The highest mountain in the Glarus Alps, its imposing, voluptuous silhouette intrigues as much as it bewitches. Its suspended glaciers and seracs exacerbate the purity and grandeur of its faces.

In this work, I wanted to place the Tödi at the heart of the Alps. As the queen of mountains and valleys, the Tödi sparkles in the foreground of the painting. Thanks to the angle of view I've chosen, the highest summits of the bernese alps, ripping through the horizon, hold their undisputed master up to the sky. The summits peaks in the background include the Aletschhorn, Finsteraarhorn, Schreckhorn, Lauteraarhorn and Mönch. To the right, Gross Spannort and Titlis rise above Engelberg.

I'd been waiting for months for a storm to arrive in the Graubünden region when, in 2020, the winds finally picked up. I knew the time had come to capture the splendor of the Tödi. Hoping that the conditions would be right, I set off to meet him. There he was, his coat of snow blazing in the sun. Beside it, on the left of the photograph, the Bifertenstock, or Piz Durschin, rises to an altitude of 3,419 metres. Its presence balances the work, and its lines draw our gaze towards a fabulous sea of clouds. Coming from the northern Alps, it spills out at an altitude of 3,422 metres over the summits of Stoc Grond and Piz Dado, both overlooking the Porta da Spescha pass. The mist rushes along the Bifertenfiren glacier, jewel of the Tödi. On this day, the elements came together to create an exceptional panorama. I'm delighted to share with you, through this work, the omnipotence of the high mountains. The beauty of a celestial realm that overwhelms me and that is inexorably threatened by peril.
