Matterhorn
Light on the north face
About the work
The north face seen here is one of the most mythical in the Alps. Along with the Eiger and Grandes Jorasses, it forms the trio of great north faces. Its shadow is massive, but today the light is redrawing it. It reveals the Hörnli ridge - the one that led Edward Whymper to the summit the mountain on July 14, 1865. He was the first man to conquer the Matterhorn. This ascent has gone down in history. Four members of the roped party fell to their deaths at the start of the descent. Since that day, the Matterhorn has embodied both victory and loss, achievement and price.
In this photograph, I wanted to capture the tension between light and shadow. Between raw power and elegant lines. The Matterhorn is the emblem of Switzerland. A presence that imposes silence and admiration.
